Today we tackled the background to WWII with a discussion launched by Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech. We then analyzed some primary sources to develop answers to historical questions on the rise of fascism in Europe and its ties to the global depression of the 1930's.
Tomorrow we will continue our focus on World War II and this Friday will be your next Scored Discussion, this one on the use of atomic weapons. Make sure you have completed the reading selections and the pre-write! H

Today we started off with a Quiz over Chapter 26. We then explored how FDR "sold" the New Deal to the American public, specifically through the use of his Fireside Chat radio broadcasts. We then examined the response of the general public and the media with some primary sources.
Tomorrow we will begin discussing the background and causes of WWII and its ties to the depression. Chapter 27 is due and don't forget that Friday you have your next Scored Discussion, this one over the use of Atomic Weapons at the end of WWII (Remember, we are skipping the new deal scored discussion! Make sure you are doing the correct readings!). H Be began today by discussing the causes of the Great Depression, using a small graphic organizer to help guide our conversation. We then spent the rest of class looking at how the depression affected people across the nation by analyzing background sheets, images, and primary sources detailing the unique challenges facing people in 8 different states.
Chapter 26 is due tomorrow and 27 on Wednesday. Don't forget also to be preparing for Friday's Scored Discussion on Atomic Weapons! H Mr. Hutchison was out for some testing today, but in his absence, you wrote your first in-class DBQ essays. Expect feedback on these by Tuesday the 9th to help you prepare for your final in-class DBQ essay on Friday, April 12th.
Chapter 25 is due on Monday, 26 on Tuesday, and 27 on Wednesday next week. Also, your next Scored Discussion will take place next Friday and will be over the use of atomic weapons at the end of WWII. Remember that we are skipping the New Deal discussion this semester! H The 1920's were the topic of conversation today. We started out using a graphic organizer to categorize information from our textbook notes on various themes from the decade. Next we explored the thematic issue of the 1920's clash between tradition and modernity.
Tomorrow you will be writing your first DBQ in class. You should review American Imperialism tonight in preparation, as well as looking back at the resources on the Writing Tips page of this site for DBQ's. H World War I was the topic today as we first explored the effects on Americans on the home front. We spent some time talking about the causes of the war as well as the reasons for America's entry into the conflict. we also had a brief conversation about the Sedition Act which was designed to tamp down dissent and was upheld numerous times by the Supreme Court.
Tomorrow we will begin talking about the 1920's and also take a few minutes to refresh your memory on the process of writing DBQ essays. Make sure you have Chapter 24 read as well! H Today we held our 4th Scored Discussion, this one over Imperialism. The online discussion board is now open for follow up discussion. Comments are due by next Monday at 10:00 pm! Chapter 23 is due tomorrow and Chapter 24 on Wednesday!
H We wrapped up the last details on Imperialism today with some political cartoons then spent the rest of the day talking about how to write DBQ essays. The slideshow we used in class today as well as other materials on DBQ's can be found on the "Writing Tips" page of this site.
Monday is your next scored discussion so make sure you are prepared! Also, Chapter 23 is due on Tuesday and 24 on Wednesday! H Imperialism was the topic of the day again today as we first discussed the major motivations for and justifications of Imperial expansion. We then explored the Philippine-American War and the historical hypotheses regarding its brutalities. We ended the day be examining some primary sources illustrating the clash between supporters of imperialism and anti-imperialists.
Make sure you are preparing for Monday's scored discussion! H We started discussing Imperialism today by spending most of class doing some historiography featuring four different historical interpretations. Tonight you need to finish up the last two columns of your information retrieval charts and be prepared to discuss tomorrow at the beginning of class. You also need to finish up any online comments from Scored Discussion 3, they are due before 10:00 pm tonight!
