Today we evaluated a series of documents, first from Abraham Lincoln, then from various voices during the Reconsrtuction, in an effort to develop arguments answering essential historical questions. We also took some time to explore the techniques associated with writing the DBQ essay. You will find more information on writing DBQ's under the "APUSH Exam Review-Writing Tips" page on this site. We will continue our discussion Monday befreo writing a practice DBQ this Friday!
Tomorrow is Exam 2. It will cover Periods 4 & 5, Chapters 8-16. As with the last exam, it will be 55 multiple choice questions in 55 minutes followed by 2 short answer questions in 25 minutes. H Today was our scored discussion over Reconstruction. Specifically, we considered the reasons for Reconstruction's ultimate end and the historical debate about the role of racism in that process. Tomorrow we will continue our discussion over Reconstruction and Chapter 16 is also due. Wednesday will be your second exam! Please make sure you have all of your chapter notes completed in your binder!

Don't forget to finish up your online submissions for Scored Discussion # 2 and finish your analysis and pre-write for Scored Discussion # 3, which will be Monday! Also, Chapter 16 is due Tuesday and your second exam is set for Wednesday! Busy Week!!! H We explored the causes of secession and the Civil War today through a wide range of historical documents, from party platforms and campaign posters to excerpts from the ordinances of secession passed by some of the Southern States. We also read some sources from historian Eric Foner to deepen our understanding of the nature of the conflict over labor and economic systems. Keep those reading in mind as you continue to work on your scored discussion readings and pre-writes for Monday!
Tomorrow is your last LEQ of the first LEQ window. You should also have your notes ready for Chapter 15! Next week we will open the first DBQ essay window which will extend for three weeks. H Today was the ACT Exam. Since this pulled all Juniors out of class for the first three periods of the day, the only class that did meet did not cover new information. Don't forget, this is a packed week of reading! Chapter 12 is due tomorrow, Chapter 14 on Thursday, and Chapter 15 on Friday. Also, don't forget the Nat Turner webquest which is due tomorrow and you need to make your required contributions to the online portion of yesterday's scored discussion by Sunday at midnight.
DON'T FORGET!!! If you are planning to take the AP exam, you MUST register online by 3:30 TOMORROW!!! See Student Services if you have any questions! H Today was our second scored discussion, this time over the links between Manifest Destiny and the Mexican-American War. There was some good discussion, but next time, I'd like you to spend a bit more of your time interrogating the historians. What do you think about the way they have structured their arguments? What about their use of evidence? How would each historian account for the evidence selected by the other?
Tomorrow is the ACT test, so everyone needs to remember to bring a photo ID tomorrow. Also, the testing means we will not have class for 1st through 3rd periods. Don't forget that Wednesday, Chapter 12 is due, Chapter 14 is due on Thursday, and Chapter 15 on Friday! The online follow up portion of today's discussion will be opened later today and will close Sunday night at Midnight!!! Make a plan now so that you aren't posting your comments at the very last minute!!! H We wrote the second of three LEQ's in our first LEQ window today. The final essay will come next Friday, then we will move on to adding the DBQ skills to your writing toolbox. Following the LEQ, we discussed Manifest Destiny through the analysis of a painting (American Progress, by John Gast) and a DocBlock (Manifest Destiny by John L. O'Sullivan). Don't forget Monday is our next scored discussion and your online portion of the first scored discussion is due Sunday night by Midnight!
H We spent the day today exploring the reactions to the early waves of immigration prior to the Civil War and interpreting some political cartoons associated with Andrew Jackson's presidency. At the end of class, you got a summative activity over this time period asking you to identify six cause and effect steps between the election of 1800 and the Trail of Tears. You need to finish that for homework tonight. Also, we assigned the Nat Turner webquest, which you can find under Period 4. That webquest will be due next Wednesday. Don't forget to be reading and analyzing the selections for Monday's scored discussions as well! You can find these under Period 5!
