After finishing up our discussion over Nixon and the effects of Watergate on American politics, we looked at varying historical interpretations of the 1970's. After that, we did a DocBlock over a set of documents from the late 70's and early 80's comparing Carter's "malaise" speech to Reagan's "Morning in America" speech along with some other documents related to the politics and economics of that time. Chapter 31 is due tomorrow and Chapter 32 on Thursday. H

We discussed conservatism in the Sixties today and looked at some of the up's and down's of the Nixon Administration. If you did not finish the Watergate primary source charts in class today, make sure you finish it tonight because we will build off of that at the first of class tomorrow!
Chapter 31 due Wednesday, three more days of new content! The end is near! H Today was your LAST DBQ essay! (Not counting the one on the AP Exam) This weekend you need to read the selection "Conservatism Begins in the Sixties" under Period 8 and be ready to discuss on Monday!
One more week of new content! Hang in there! H Today we took our LAST CHAPTER QUIZ! We then talked about some of the historical context surrounding the Great Society programs of the late 1960's then examined a set of documents through four different historical lenses to gather the details necessary to craft a practice thesis statement on a larger, more encompassing historical question on the success of the Great Society.
Tomorrow if your FINAL DBQ of the year! Make sure you check out the revised Writing Tips page, the DBQ practice activities, and the student samples provided there. Next Wednesday, Chapter 31 is due and Chapter 32 is due on Thursday. Your last regular exam of the year will be NEXT FRIDAY! H Today our topic was the Vietnam War and its effects on those who fought and on the american homefront. Don't forget that tomorrow Chapter 30 is due!
H The Civil Rights Movement was the topic today as we started with a discussion of the reasons for the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott then examined a set of documents on the effects of the more violent forces in the Movement. We followed this with an extended DocBlock lit circle examining opposing points of view by Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
H Reviewing for the AP Exam
Happy three weeks until the APUSH exam. Fall students should be well into reviewing through videos, books, your notes, etc. We will hold a review session Wednesdays 4/19 and 4/26 from 2:30-4:30, as well as a briefer one during lunch Tuesday 4/25 if you can’t make it Wednesday. These sessions will be a broad review of format, style, and strategies for the AP Exam. They will NOT be a content review of everything up until this point, though there will be time for questions. You can find the slides we’ll be going through here: goo.gl/kaHpxc You are going to do great. Check out the “APUSH Exam Review” section of our site, paying special attention to the Curricular Framework by Collegeboard. Please remember that since the 2015 reformatting, the APUSH exam does NOT emphasize trivia, and is instead about applying the critical thinking skills to contextualize stimuli (including paragraphs, charts, images, etc) into the broad AP themes. As such, we don’t especially recommend going over old tests, as that is a less efficient way to review content than the many other resources available. Old writing is available if you want to review it during tutorials or after school by appointment. There is also a free “AP Prepathon” course online this Saturday 4/22 from 1-5pm on kaptest.com/apprepathon (where I believe they want you to sign-up beforehand). Work hard, have a plan and stick to it, take care of yourself with lots of sleep and rest. I believe in you and know you will do your best. HAPP-y studying! Today we talked about the Cold War and checked the Chapter 29 notes. We started with a discussion over an essay by George Orwell on the effects of atomic weapons on global politics then examined some primary sources with an eye toward developing hypotheses on the causes of the Cold War. We then did a Lit Circle over a set of documents representing opposing points of view on the Cold War and finished the day by answering essential questions in Cold War Stations.
H Today we covered the social and cultural changes in America in the 1950's. We first examined a set of documents related to youth and teen culture in the 1950's and it's influence on the broader American culture of the time. We followed this with an examination of a set of documents on the status of women in the 1950's and then ended the day by analyzing the gender roles represented in 1950's media.
Enjoy the week off, but don't forget, Chapter 29 is due Monday! H Scored discussion today! The topic of the bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki generated some interesting discussion! The online portion of the discussion will be due NEXT SUNDAY, April 15, by midnight. Tomorrow we will continue discussing the postwar years and Chapter 28 is due.
