NOTE!!! The scored discussion next Thursday will cover the topic of Manifest Destiny. The documents, etc. for this discussion are on the Period 5 page of the site. Unfortunately there was an old discussion still active on the Period 4 page and a few people started looking at that issue yesterday. We apologize for the confusion, but since there is still plenty of time before the discussion, please prepare for the discussion posted on the Period 5 page. Thanks!
Today we finished up our discussion of the reform movements in antebellum America bu completing our DocBlock Lit Circle discussion. We then looked at the changes to American society and economics represented by the Market Revolution by analyzing some data from the time. We wrapped up the day looking at differing interpretations of Jacksonian Democracy from four different historians. This weekend, you need to finish any work on those interpretations your class did not get to before the end of the day. You also need to have Chapter 12 ready for Monday as well as reading the selection "Rock, Paper, Scissors" by Jill Lepore under Period 5 on the website. Last of all, if you have time, you can continue prep work for next Thursday's Scored Discussion (remember, you do not have school next Wednesday!) -H Today we started out with the Chapter 13 Quiz, then we continued analyzing the developments of the Jacksonian Era, focusing on the Reform movements in a DocBlock Lit Circle after wrapping up our discussion on Indian Removal through the lens of newspaper editorials. Tonight you need to finish up your Chapter 9 notes and you can also begin working on the preparation for your first in-class Scored Discussion which will take place next Thursday. You will find all of the directions and necessary materials for this discussion under Period 5 on the website. The topic is Manifest Destiny.
-H The Jackson Administration and Indian Removal were the topics of the day today. \We started out be reviewing the major issues of the era then continued by analyzing some political cartoons from the era. We next moved to a debrief of last night's homework reading followed by a final activity analyzing some newspaper editorials addressing Indian Removal. We will finish up the discussion over those editorials tomorrow. Also, don't forget that Chapter 13 is due tomorrow and Chapter 9 on Friday!
-H Today we discussed a variety of issues which occupied the United States in the first decades of the 19th century, starting with a discussion over the causes of the War of 1812, emphasizing a western focus as essential to understanding the war. We next completed and discussed a DocBlock HAPP over the Monroe Doctrine from an address by President James Monroe. We finished up the class period by analyzing five significant court cases decided by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Marshall (side note - Mr. Hutchison got his Master's degree from Marshall University, named for John Marshall).
Tonight you need to read the selection under Period 4 on "Indian Relations" from the book Natives and Strangers and be prepared to discuss your thoughts at the beginning of class tomorrow. Don't forget, Chapter 13 is due Thursday and Chapter 9 on Friday! -H |
