We had a very unusual day today with the PSAT testing throwing the schedule into chaos and taking some of you from 4th period out of class to test. the rest of us had our first scored discussion today covering the reading selection from chapter 8 of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." I will post scores Thursday by student ID so you can see what you may need to do in the online portion to make up some points missed in class if you didn't score 15 in class points. The online portion of the discussion will open Thursday after school and I will share the directions and expectations then. 4th period test takers today will do their in class portion of the discussion after the DBQ tomorrow.
Which brings up the point... Tomorrow is the first full in-class DBQ! I have posted the grading rubric under the Writing Tips in the APUSH Exam Review section of the site. H

We continued our discussion over Manifest Destiny today then started working on a set of US maps indicating the conflicts and compromises over slavery in the west from 1820 and the Missouri Compromise through the election of 1860. We also discussed writing a DBQ by examining a sample paragraph analyzing a document.
Tomorrow is our first Scored Discussion, so be certain you have read the selection we are discussing and completed the written reflection which is a portion of your grade. The discussion will be worth 45 points, 20 from the written portion, 15 from the in class discussion and 10 from the follow up online discussion. i will give you the directions for the online follow up tomorrow. The directions for the written reflection and a student sample are posted under Period 5 at the top near the link to the reading selection. Also, Thursday will be your in-class DBQ! Good Luck!!! H After the quiz on chapters 14-16 today, we started our period 5 material by introducing the topic of Manifest Destiny. We also began our discussion over writing a DBQ essay which we will continue tomorrow. Tonight's homework is to be working on the reading and reflection for the first Scored Discussion later this week! The reading selection and the directions for your written reflection are under period 5, as well as a sample student reflection and the discussion rubric. H Today was another whirlwind day as we worked to catch back up from my absence last week. We talked about the Market Revolution and about changes and challenges for American Identity with a growing, mobile populations do large scale immigration from new regions of Europe. We also wrapped up the reform movements with a lit circle and stations. If you didn't finish the summaries of the five documents in the lit circle, they are in the Period 4 DocBlock (they are Grimke, JQAdams, Murray, Fugutive slave, and Lowell Mill worker docs). Also, you need to finish up the reformers stations worksheet and then complete the Nat Turner webquest under Period 5 activities. Monday will also be your Chapters 14-16 quiz. Busy weekend folks, sorry :( The grades for the last exam are posted and I'm putting the essay grades in starting later tonight. I know that excites you! ;). H Today we wrapped up the politics of Period 4 looking at the second party system with the Whig party then we discussed the reform movements that developed from 1800 to 1850 as well. Tonight's homework is to finish the DBQ form for the CG Finney document, both of which are under DocBlock on Period 4 then to read the excerpts from Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" at this link then answer the questions at this link.
H Busy day today as we dealt with alternate bell schedules, extended and shortened classes and crazy amounts of material and skills in class. We used a variety of approaches to experience, evaluate and order the wealth of events and historical implications arising out of the Jacksonian Era. We worked on thesis statements, historical periodization, causes and effects, continuities and changes, political cartoon analysis and interpretation, and summation and categorization of the significant issues during Jackson's presidency. A lot of good, higher level work today!
Tonight you need to finish up a few things if you didn't get them completed in class: The thesis rewrites and the Jackson Summary charts. You also need to go to the Period 4 materials, and under DocBlock you will find a document called "Whigs and Democrats." You need to read and answer the questions. These will be due tomorrow! By the way, the DBQ will be THURSDAY NEXT WEEK due to the pep rally on Friday!! Also, Chapter 17 has been REMOVED from the quiz on Monday and moved to the following Monday's quiz!! H Today was a race through the background to and major issues of the Jackson Era. We focused on domestic economic and political changes because America was rapidly changing (as you learned from your SkillBlock activity) and politics during this time were particularly volatile (what with the potential Civil War during the Nullification Crisis and all). Specifically, we discovered the changes in democratic participation brought about by the "Corrupt Bargain," the "Petticoat Wars," the use of the Veto to assert executive authority and the Nullification Crisis.
Tonight you will learn about the Indian Removal Act and the Bank Wars through your homework. The homework assignments are numbers 1 & 2 at the top of the Period 4 materials activities. We also discussed the AP Exam and your upcoming DBQ essay. It seems there is a pep rally next Friday, so your DBQ may be next Thursday instead, we will verify this information tomorrow!!! As a heads up, you will also have your first scored discussion next Wednesday! More information will be coming soon on how to prepare and how you will be scored! H Today we took the Chapters 11-13 Quiz then examined a primary source that gave us a snapshot of American Identity in 1800. We spent a considerable portion of class catching up on information missed during my absence then ended by working on thesis statements (4th) and our 2-minute drill process which we will continue refining this week. The two minute drill today was to use any of the possible response choices on your two-minute menu to respond to the objective for today: Students will assess the importance of the War of 1812 in forming an American identity. If you didn't finish in class, turn it in tomorrow on your way into class. From tomorrow on, these will be turned in BEFORE you leave each day! :)
H So, I finally sorted through all of the pile of mess the substitute left on my desk. I seriously think they shuffled all of the papers like a huge deck of cards before they left! What I now have, is a lot of grading to catch up on. I still have a few essays to finish and I've only just started on the short answers from the exam. My goal is to have the essay grades in by Wednesday and the exams by Thursday. I apologize it is taking so long to get these things completed, but the circumstances have been a bit unusual as you know. We will be introducing a few new aspects of our class procedure this week and refreshing our memory on some of the old ones that fell by the wayside while I was out.The next two weeks we will be sorting thing out and getting back into the groove and on track, so we will be moving pretty quickly. Make sure you come by tutorials if you are lost or have questions at any point!
H Well, first day back today! Thanks for the welcome back today guys! I appreciate your patience this past week while I was out for treatment and the substitutes rotating in and out. I'm looking over the materials that were left piled on my desk and formulating an impression of what was completed while I was gone and what holes need to be patched before we move on. You WILL have your next chapter quiz on Monday, covering chapters 11-13, so be studying up for that. You also will need to turn in your DocBlock and SkillBlock portions of your binders tomorrow so i can grade those over the weekend. If you were absent at any timeso far this year, make sure you check the blog for that day and then check the period materials for any Blocks you might be missing. The last DocBlock assignment I will be looking for is the Washington's Farewell. If you turned that in to the sub, I'll find it there, don't worry. Timelines won't be due until Tuesday (BONUS ~ ask your parents why that's funny to an 80's kid!) I'm attaching a copy of the timeline form and a slide with the requirements. I'll come up with the plan for anything else funky from the past week and let you know tomorrow. As for today's class, I tried to give you a quick primer/refresher on the Washington & Adams presidencies and the election of 1800 and explore some continuities in American history as well. We also talked about the requirements for AP Short Answer questions. You will find a slide with those tips attached as well and tomorrow you will have a practice, timed AP Short Answer question in class. I would review the "Ograbme" cartoon at the bottom of Period 3 materials tonight, "wink, wink, nudge, nudge." Enjoy the cold rainy evening! the first of many this year! Hot Chocolate weather is upon us! :) H
